Palace Quarter is definitely the district of universities and, consequently, of young people. So in the case of this bourgeois apartment, the first step was to formulate a design brief optimized for long-term rental. Rather than maximizing the number of rentable rooms, the goal was to create a high-quality living environment by building on the existing values of the apartment. The entrance hall, lined with mirrors on both sides, establishes a visual connection between the private and communal areas and activates the circulation zone. Meanwhile, the generously sized living room–kitchen–dining area, with its community-forming role, makes the rental both livable and inviting. Reconfiguring the bathrooms into a dense core allowed for a rationalization of construction costs, while the light well stays accessible from the apartment—converted into an outdoor shower provides relief in the overheated summers of Budapest’s inner city.
